This project was created for an online exhibit for Add Art, and curated by Paddy Johnson. Add Art is a firefox extension that replaces online advertisement with new artworks. For my piece, I took the text of the ten greatest English novels ( according to the American Library Association ) compressed each book’s text into a single image and used each image as one frame in an animated GIF. This created a typographic noise reminiscent of television static.
Through this piece I was trying to explore the nature of the internet as a compressed information space and how any incidental content is reduced to visual noise regardless of content.
Below is an example of the ads being replaced on ArtNet and also examples of the different size ads generated for the project.
