7476196327.jpg &&& NORRECE T. JONES Sr., retired vice president for fiscal affairs for Cheyney University, Army veteran of World War II and active churchman, died Monday. He was 90 and lived in West Philadelphia. He was born in Anderson, S.C., to Dora and Norrece T. Jones, and raised in Ocean City, N.J., by an aunt, Leola Hudson. He graduated from Ocean City High School, where he sang in the glee club. While working his way through Hampton University, he became a champion boxer in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association. His college education was interrupted when he entered the Army in World War II. He served in the Signal Corps in France and Italy, attaining the rank of master sergeant. After the war, he returned to Hampton University and received a bachelor of science degree. He married Marie E. Bailey on July 20, 1946. He and Marie moved to Philadelphia, where he studied business administration at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He went to work as a bookkeeper for Cheyney University and ran its business affairs for 35 years. He retired in 1983. Norrece was a life member of the NAACP, and was a member of George T. Cornish Post 292 of the American Legion. For more than a decade he served as treasurer of the Rho chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity. He was an active member of St. Matthew African Methodist Episcopal church, West Philadelphia, where he was a trustee, an usher and member of the South Carolina Club. He started the free tax program at the church after being certified by the IRS. Norrece was active in working with seniors in the church and the community. Besides his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Yosette Jones Johnson; a son, Norrece T. Jones Jr., and a grandson, Ajamu Johnson. Services: 10:30 a.m. today at St. Matthew AME Church, 57th and Summer streets. Friends may call at 9 a.m. Burial will be in Forest Hills Cemetery.
